In the summer of 2011, Junior Aspirin Records (Andy Cooke, Dan Fox and Nathaniel Mellors) produced a series of four themed listening sessions, or "Audio Annotations", for Dexter Sinister's Serving Library residency at The Banff Centre, Canada. Designed to encourage thinking away from the printed word, each hour-long session was comprised of a commentary woven into a playlist of songs, each one chosen for its associative links to a topic. Whiskey was served and the sessions were played at high volume in total darkness. The Banff Annotations were themed around narrative, taste, materiality and community. For Artists Space, Dexter Sinister have asked J.A.R. to produce a new session themed around "Identity", presented by Dan Fox, and an accompanying text for the latest issue of the journal Bulletins of The Serving Library.

The listening session will inaugurate this second issue of Bulletins, the house journal of The Serving Library that continues the trajectory of its forerunner Dot Dot Dot. The new issue has grown out of two physical incarnations of The Serving Library in 2011 – first at The Banff Centre in Canada over the summer, and now at Artists Space. The individual "bulletins" that comprise this issue include "Everything is in Everything," "It is the Outsidedness Flavor of it," and "If Things are not Quickly to go Pear-shaped." Advance copies of the journal will be available on the night for $15. As with all the issues, the whole is freely available to download from www.servinglibrary.org, as well as the first four J.A.R. Annotations, which will be made available online after the event.

Junior Aspirin Records take part in a one day festival of artists' music, organised by artist/musician Andy Holden, at Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge, on Saturday 11 September.

"The festival is set across three uniquely constructed stages in the grounds of Wysing Arts Centre, and is organized and arranged by artist/musician Andy Holden. Throughout the day artists will perform their music on the two outdoor stages whist a program of films that explore music from a more documentary or anthropological perspective, and live performances, take place in the cinema stage.

The festival includes live music from Martin Creed and His Band, Bob and Roberta Smith's Apathy Band, Long Meg, Juneau Projects, Kaffe Matthews, Sue Tompkins, Owl Project, Die Kunst, Grubby Mitts, Joanna Robertson, Sam Belinfante, The Errorists, Saydance, Babygrand, Johnny Parry, Ricky Leach and many others. Andy Cooke presents a collection of tracks hanging in a suspended animation, a kind of activity schedule for purgatory. More or less pagan, but all virtuous, some of these cuts are noisy, some are contemplative - some will survive for minutes, others might keep well for centuries. The plan is to replace all the organic elements with synthetic hardware in preparation for a cybernetic crisis free future, probably without a banking system.

JA SALES BLURB: A new full length LP by Country Teasers frontman Ben The Rebel Wallers is always something to savour. The Incredible Hulk is a brooding and brilliant work. Its darkness is punctured by skewed, experimental pop songs. The epic, pitch-black opener 'Ambient Pasteman' details childrens TV character Postman Pat's relationship problems ("Postman Pat booted out his wife because Postman Pat didn't like his wife" and is followed by the poppier 'Cherish' ("we must cherish the drugs we have, for as long as we have the drugs") and the anthemic 'Aiming Low, Getting High' (released on 7" by Lexi-Disques last year). 'Christmas Every Day' is a snapshot of a nightmare - a man talks in earnest about how he celebrates Christmas every day, watching the Queen's speech on endless video loops. The voice emerges from monstrous guitar noise and machine gun fire. Wallers' satirical gifts are to the fore in 'On My Own' - it has a rather catchy chorus but the lyrics are an interpolation of a popular paedophile joke which then works as an intro for 'The Forest' - a psychotic recontextualization of 'A Forest' by The Cure. A crackling copy of that record is put on and gets stuck on Robert Smith's familiar vocal "again and again and again" - looping over and over. Is this an acid blast at 60's-80's recycling in the moribund British pop scene, a twisted tribute, or a sick joke? Or all of the above? The Rebel is fucking with us again - thank God. The Incredible Hulk is also The Rebel's most colorful LP ever.

Starting with the amazing BOB PARKS' "The R&B Feeling"...

Bob Parks' eclectic career stretches back almost 40 years and has its roots in the experimental performance art of the 1960s and early 1970s. Bob moved from the UK to Watts, South Central Los Angeles in 1972 and joined the black Pentecostal church COGIC (in order "to discover the roots of R+B") at the same time as developing experimental performance work with artist John Duncan (later notorious for a work in which he had sex with a corpse). His years in LA included a three-month phase during which he only wore a jock strap, and a period enrolled at the Lee Strasberg acting school which led to a walk-on role in Martin Scorcese's 1977 film 'New York New York'. During this time, Bob formed the performance group 'Bignose', staging confrontational performances in LA punk clubs such as The Masque, twice appearing on Chuck Barris' The Gong Show on national TV. His psychotic, polyphonic brilliance and productivity in the face of obscurity is reminiscent of 'outsider' artists and musicians such as Henry Flynt, Daniel Johnston and Henry Darger. Bob’s work is profoundly celebratory, filtered through his love of rhythm and blues (a term used by his friend Johnny Otis) and includes poetry, photo-realist portrait paintings, music, video and installation works as well as site-specific performances. The R+B Feeling is an album of raw, psychedelic gospel featuring period recordings made with the gospel community in Watts, LA and Bob’s own, unique brand of low-fi songwriting. Limited - 500 copies with gatefold LP, interview and free DOWNLOAD with MP3s, bonus track and 2 MP4 video clips – Bob Parks performing on 'The Gong Show', American TV in 1978 and Bob Parks' at COGIC, South Central Los Angeles, 2005.
